Express apprehension that it would increase the chance of infection of Covid-19
Agitated over the diktat of the department to weigh the infants and children, the association of Anganwadi workers has expressed its anger over the order. In a letter to the director women and child development department, the president of association Rekha Negi said that the Angandwadi workers are being asked to take body weights of the children from 6 months of age to six years which poses a threat of spreading infection of Covid-19. She said that the Anganwadi workers are engaged in the duties of keeping watch over the returnees in their areas and are actively working on quarantine duties. She said that the department has not provided any protective equipment such as masks, gloves and sanitisers so that these poorly paid workers can remain safe.
Negi said on one hand the state government is regularly asking people to maintain social distancing to prevent spread of contagion and on the other the director has ordered that the Anganwadi workers would visit households for taking the body weight of children. Negi said that it is impossible to adhere to social distancing norms while measuring the weight of children. She said that the state government should take responsibility for those Anganwadi workers who get infected while doing the task of measuring the weights. The President of Association warned that the Anganwadi workers would be forced to start an agitation if the order is not taken back.
