Opposition stages walkout, demands increased compensation
The Vidhan Sabha Speaker Prem Chand Agrawal directed the formation of a committee of Assembly members to inspect the site of the hooch tragedy to learn about the situation and present recommendations for effective solutions to the problem. However, Congress members were not satisfied with both the Speaker and State Government not considering the demand for raising compensation amount to Rs 10 lakh each for the families of those killed. The opposition members staged a walkout and protested on the staircase leading to the House.
Following debate on the incident under rule 310, the Speaker directed formation of a House committee to look into the incident and submit its report. The members of the committee would be announced later. The committee would also submit recommendations for resolving issues that lead to such incidents. However, the opposition members objected stating that no mention was made about increasing compensation for the bereaved families and affected persons.
They stressed that the compensation amount for the bereaved families should be raised to Rs
After raising slogans for some time, they walked out of the House and staged a protest on the stairs leading to the House. Later, addressing media persons, leader of opposition Indira Hridayesh said that despite the seriousness of the incident, the State Government had remained insensitive.
Even the Rs 2lakh compensation announced for each bereaved family will be paid after the viscera report is received. Stating that no Minister of the State Government had visited the area and met the affected families, she said that the stance of the Government had exposed its “anti-Dalit” face. Stating that the opposition was duty bound to pressure the Government in the interests of the public, she said that the Government had still remained silent, forcing the opposition to walk out of the House.
