No rallies on main roads during peak hours, says DIG Khurana
Deputy inspector general and Traffic Directorate director Kewal Khurana has reiterated that rallies should not be allowed on the main roads during peak hours. Despite comparatively sparse traffic on Sunday, various processions taken out in the city caused disruption of traffic on different roads.
Processions taken out for religious, cultural, protest and political purposes in the provisional state capital from time to time cause considerable disruption in traffic and major inconvenience to the public. With the local authorities appearing helpless to effectively address this issue, DIG Kewal Khurana has reiterated that any sort of procession shall not be allowed on the main roads of the city during peak hours.
He told The Pioneer through phone from Assam, where he is on election duty, that he will once again speak to the officers concerned on this issue. He said, “I will speak about this issue to Dehradun senior superintendent of police once I come back. We have earlier issued letters to superintendent of police (Traffic) and other officers who are on field that these processions should not be allowed on the main roads, especially during peak hours. If necessary they can be held early in the morning,” he added.
About the traffic congestion caused by various processions here on Sunday, SP (Traffic) Prakash Chandra said, “A proper route plan was made for these processions and traffic police men were also present with the procession. However, route diversion always creates difficulties for the citizens.”
It is pertinent to mention here that on the occasion of Bhim Rao Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, a procession was held that started from DL Road and passed through Kanak Chowk, Lansdowne Chowk, Survey Chowk and then ended at at DL Road again. Similarly procession of Veer Savarkar Sangathan on the occasion of Ram Navami disrupted traffic near Clock Tower and nearby areas.
