‘The victory margin will be bigger’
Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from Haridwar who is also the incumbent MP from the constituency Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank has claimed a thumping victory of his party this time too. He also expressed the hope that his victory margin would even cross the 2014 margin of over 1.7.5 lakh votes. He said this while addressing a rally of the BJP activists on Monday. Seeking to strike a chord with the people, the former chief minister of the state said that Haridwar was his family and every member of the family was his own. Recalling the 2014 Lok Sabha election in which he had contested for the first time, he said that it had been a neck and neck fight then. “I fought against the wife of the then chief minister Harish Rawat, but the people reposed faith in me and I won with a margin of 1.75 lakh votes. But now, the scene had changed,” he said and added that his confidence had stemmed from the good works he had done over the past five years. “I have nursed my constituency to the best of my ability,” he averred.
Speaking to the media persons before filing his nomination papers, Nishank said that he had not just been the chief minister of the state but the Union minister twice before Uttarakhand had been carved out of Uttar Pradesh. “In 2014, the BJP high command asked me to resign from the Vidhan Sabha and fight the LS poll. That time it was a tough fight, but the people elected me. Over the past five years, I firmed up a developmental map for the district . Development quantum has broken the record of the past 50 years. Different welfare initiatives have benefitted 10,000 families,” he said.
He claimed that Rs 226 crore had been given to the gram panchayats at his initiative over the past five years. “I envisioned a smart city for Haridwar with ring road and flyovers which is yet to take shape. Besides, industries are in a good shape here and they are generating employment opportunities for the people,” he said.
Before filing his nomination, he paid obeisance at the fabled Mayadevi temple. He was accompanied by the chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, cabinet ministers-Madan Kausik and Prakash Pant- and Khanpur legislator Kumwar Pranav Singh Champion among others during the filing of nomination.
Quizzed over his earlier remark, dubbing Nishank as ‘Pravasi’, a barb which kicked up a row in the state, Champion said that the remark had been made was before the polls. “Now, I am solidly with the party and the candidate. I would stop at nothing to ensure that Nishank wins,” he said. In a barb flung at Harish Rawat, he said that the Congress leader had fled from Haridwar, sure of a humiliating defeat .
Meanwhile, a huge election rally was organised by BJP at Prem Nagar ashram to felicitate Nishank on the day.
