The constitution is the soul of Indian democracy and source of all its powers. Along with the rights, citizens should also be aware of their duties. Governor Baby Rani Maurya said this while speaking at a programme held at the Raj Bhawan to mark Constitution Day on Tuesday.
She said, “Our constitution imparts the right of equality and opportunities without any discrimination based on caste, class, religion and gender. November 26 is also a sacred and respected day for the people of India like August 15 and January 26. The Indian constitution has proved its relevance and glory since 70 years. BR Ambedkar had said that constitution was not just a document of lawyers but a life practice in itself.”
Maurya further said that the constitution not only imparts the rights but also the duties. People should be aware of their duties along with the rights for the integrity and progress of the nation. Obligation of all the fundamental duties in the constitution should be supreme duty of all the citizens of India. Developing scientific temper in society and ensuring education to children are also included in the fundamental duties, she added.
The governor’s secretary Ramesh Kumar Sudhanshu said that the constitution makes way for the rule of equality. The preamble to the constitution is crisp and key to the constitution. He also stressed on according importance to duties along with rights.
Legal adviser to the governor, Kahkasha Khan said that constitution of India includes best properties of various constitutions from across the world. The citizens should be aware of their duties along with fundamental rights. Where rights end, duties start there. Respecting women and maintain communal harmony are also part of fundamental duties, she added.
MLA Deshraj Karanwal, officials and invited guests were also among those present on the occasion.
