Mulayam wishes Modi comeback as PM, much to SP MPs’ chagrin
The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Wednesday looked badly divided with its chief patron Mulayam Singh Yadav praising the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while its members condemning them.
Before Mulayam shocked everyone by praising Modi and wishing him success in 2019 Lok Sabha poll, SP MPs in the Lok Sabha were aggressively raising the issue of Yogi Government’s preventing his son Akhilesh Yadav from flying to Prayagraj on the pretext of law and order. On the last day of the 16th Lok Sabha, Mulayam moved away from his party’s line and heaped praise on Modi and blessed him for a second innings as Prime Minister of the country, a sentiment acknowledged by the BJP leader with folded hands.
The “blessings” for Modi by Mulayam that left Opposition members squirming came at a time when his son Akhilesh Yadav has joined hands with arch rival Mayawati of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to challenge BJP in the politically crucial State of Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. UP accounts for 80 of the 545 Lok Sabha seats.
“I wish that all members come back to the House,” Yadav said during the last sitting of the 16th Lok Sabha.
And pointing to Modi, Mulayam said he wishes that the BJP leader comes back as the Prime Minister, remarks that drew applause from the treasury benches.
“I wish pradhan mantriji becomes pradhan mantri again,” said Mulayam, with UPA chairperson and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi by his side. Sonia appeared flustered with Mulayam’s remark.
The ruling NDA alliance members lustily cheered Mulayam with chants of “Jai Shri Ram” as he praised Modi for making efforts to take everyone along.
“I congratulate him (Modi) for making efforts to take everyone along,” Mulayam said, adding the Prime Minister has done good work.
Modi acknowledged the SP patriarch’s praise with folded hands and later made a mention of Mulayam’s “blessings” when he took the floor to deliver his speech.
“There is much to do. And Mulayam Singhji has given his blessings. I am very grateful to him.”
Mulayam later ducked questions on his praise for Modi when he was mobbed by reporters while leaving the Lok Sabha.
Mulayam’s compliments to Modi raised many eyebrows within his party as during the Zero Hour, Dharmendra Yadav and other SP members had displayed placards to register their protest against the action of UP authorities. Mulayam, whose forehead was bandaged, alleged that workers were lathi-charged by UP Police on Tuesday.
