Struggling to overcome challenges in ensuring effective door to door collection of waste in the city, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) expects to further improve this task. The state administration is considering a proposal sent earlier by the corporation for providing more garbage collection vehicles. Further, the MCD is also planning to effectively facilitate the segregation of waste at source.
The deputy municipal commissioner Rohitash Sharma said that the city will see more of these vehicles plying in the wards, making it easier to collect and segregate waste.
According to officials, the MCD has initiated the process of segregating waste in about 25 municipal wards. Lack of waste segregation at source is one of the major problems being faced in proper disposal of municipal waste in the city.
The garbage collected door to door will be segregated by the households before handing over to MCD.
“People will be asked to segregate the waste manually into dry and wet garbage before dumping it in the garbage vans. We will make them aware before initiating the process,” said Sharma.
According to the chief municipal health officer Dr Kailash Joshi, the vehicles the MCD possesses have inbuilt partition but the hired vehicles do not have the partition.
“More than half our work will be done if partition will be made in around 100 vehicles which we have hired from the company,” said Dr Joshi.
When asked about shortage of workers in the MCD the deputy municipal commissioner said that the corporation had sent a proposal to the state government. Once the proposal gets sanctioned this issue will be resolved too.
According to Dr Joshi, the corporation has sent a proposal to the government seeking 411 more workers. “We are working on achieving 100 per cent results,” he added.
About segregation of waste, he said that it means dividing waste into dry and wet. “Wet waste will be used for composting and we will recycle the dry waste,” he said.
