
Drive against single-use plastic continues in city
The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) resumed distribution of cloth bags in the wards on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the corporation also continued its drive against single-use plastic in the city.
The municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey informed that the distribution of cloth bags has started from Wednesday onwards and will continue till the corporation distributes two lakh bags. The officials of MCD informed that 10,000 bags were issued on Wednesday. The corporation will continue to release the cloth bags till the drive is completed. According to one of the officials the MCD has distributed 40,000 bags till now.
“We have resumed distributing the bags and will make sure that these reach every household,” said deputy municipal commissioner Rohitash Sharma.
“The MCD started distributing these bags to ensure that no one uses polythene bags. Distributing cloth bags is a part of the MCD’s campaign against the use of polythene,” he said.
Earlier this month the MCD had set up a committee to look after the zone-wise enforcement of the polythene ban in the city. Hence, the MCD’s latest drive to enforce the ban on single-use plastic is being done zone wise. The teams formed for the enforcement have issued 46 challans till now. On the first day of the drive they issued 19 challans and collected Rs 77,500 as penalty from the violators. On the next day of the drive one of the teams issued 27 challans and collected an amount of Rs 33,650 in penalty. Attachments area.
