MCD officials state PWD responsible for removing encroachments on drains
Even after Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and Dehradun district magistrate C Ravishankar ordered removal of encroachments–especially on drains-causing water logging, nothing has been done so far.
Officials of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) state that the responsibility has been given to the Public Work Department (PWD) hence the MCD has a very less part in this.
Chief medical health officer of MCD Dr Kailash Joshi said, “The work to remove the encroachments especially from the drains is a task assigned to PWD and we have a very limited part to play in this.
The cleaning is the only thing which can we can do.” It is important to mention that the heavy rainfall which occurred in the city on Thursday morning caused water logging problem in various parts of the city.
The promises made by the officials for minimising the water logging this year has evidently remained hollow. A total of 30 complaints were registered in the MCD disaster management cell in which a majority were of water logging.
More than 10 complaints were received on Thursday. Giving information about the staff recruited for disaster management Joshi said, “Three teams are formed to work for the disaster management cell. The staff of five workers in the morning, five in the afternoon and ten in the evening are assigned in the cell which is being headed by a nodal officer.
Four water pumps, two tractors and four JCBs are regularly working to reduce water logging problems in the city.”
