MCD considering proposals to recycle city’s plastic waste
In view of the rise in the use of single-use plastic in Dehradun for over five months, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is considering proposals of various organisations to recycle the plastic waste. When the State Government lifted the ban from the use of single-use plastic to facilitate the services including supply of food packages among others during the lockdown to contain Covid-19, the plastic waste generation increased drastically in the city. On being asked about the increasing plastic use in the last few months, the mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ recently said that the pandemic, in a way, has reversed the efforts of MCD in restricting the use of plastic in the city but according to him, the corporation will once again put all the efforts and start campaigns on the issue. According to the officials, the corporation is receiving proposals from several organisations to recycle the plastic waste generated in the city and the MCD is still checking out the proposals. The officials stated that the corporation is planning the strategy to lessen the use of plastic in the city and a campaign for the same will be launched soon too.
AIIMS Rishikesh to establish plastic banks for recycling
As an initiative to properly dispose of the generated plastic waste, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh will set up plastic banks in association with Social Development for Communities Foundation. According to the foundation’s Anoop Nautiyal, there is a considerable increase in the amount of plastic waste generation in the last few months and recycling this kind of waste is an effective way to deal with the issue. He said that his foundation had already established plastic banks in Dehradun last year from which the collected plastic waste is being recycled in Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR-IIP) and in similar way, the plastic waste from AIIMS will be recycled here too.
