Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat along with mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ and other MCD employees started the sanitation drive and plastic-polythene free India campaign from Behal Chowk to Gandhi Park on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. CM Rawat also administered oath to the citizens, officers and employees present during the ‘Swachchhta Hi Seva’ programme to make Uttarakhand clean and free of single use plastic. Earlier, the CM paid tributes to MK Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries.
Addressing the people CM said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a message of plastic free India to the people on the150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Plastic has several side effects and in order to prevent these we have to stop using it altogether. Due to increasing use and inefficient disposal of plastic many of drains in are blocked due to which we face problems like waster logging. Plastic is also the reason behind many diseases. Uttarakhand will be the first state to achieve the prime minister’s dream to make India a plastic free nation,”said Rawat.
Mayor Gama said, “MCD is already conducting a full blown campaign in all 100 wards, many children and local people have also joined our campaign. On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti as well we are conducting sanitation drive in different parts of the city. Our teams collected polythene carry bags, wrappers and other garbage consisting of polythene and plastic as part of this drive.”
Tehri MP Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah was also present on the occasion.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Dehradun municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey had directed a thorough sanitation drive plan for October 2, according to which different MCD officers headed sanitation drives in different areas. Other than that an awareness song was also launched by by CM Rawat during the programme. The song is in Garhwali-Kumaoni language and is for the awareness programme that is being conducted by MCD.
