With the increase in number of force centralised at Haridwar and nearby areas, the force stationed in Dehradun is becoming thin
For the smooth and secure conduct of Kanwad Mela 2019, Uttarakhand police headquarters have deployed a heavy force. However, with the increase in number of force centralised at Haridwar and nearby areas, the force stationed in Dehradun is becoming thin . According to the sources, the reducing number of police personnel in the city is visible in reduction in the patrolling parties and at pickets stationed at several crucial places.
According to the information provided by police headquarters, for the Kanwad Mela district Haridwar, Dehradun, Pauri and Tehri have been divided in 36 zones and 149 sectors. From July 15, 112 Inspectors, 729 sub-inspectors, 414 head constables, 4030 constables, 660 home guard and 1050 personnel of Providence police department (PVD) would be on Kanwad duty. In addition to that there are 22 companies of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and six companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF). Apart from them bomb squads, fire service units and Jal police are also stationed. The personnel of different wings are asked to conduct routine checking in all four districts.
According to the sources, the police force in Dehradun district has been reducing since the start of Char Dham Yatra season. In addition to that the VVIP-VIP movements and now Kanwad Yatra have again diverted the district police force in other places, which in return is making it difficult for the district officers.
Traffic congestions in the city have worsened since the start of monsoon season and the less number of police personnel on field is not helping in keeping the traffic operation smooth. At several crucial places and junctions in the city instead of two or three traffic police personnel there is only one person stationed. At a junction like Doon Hospital Chowk, which leads to the Doon Hospital, office of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and District Magistrate traffic congestion has become a routine. However, senior police officers at PHQ are of the view that since Kanwad Mela is organised every year, this year should not be any different for other districts. The law and order will be maintained in any situation, they informed.
