Dehradun police have busted a gang of interstate criminals engaged in duping people in the name of their insurance policy maturity. Informing the media persons about the modus operandi of the gang and subsequent arrest of its members, the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dehradun, Nivedita Kukreti said that police had acted after one Sunil Singhwal had submitted a written complaint at the SSP office, saying that he had been duped of Rs 10 lakh by some fraudsters.
The complainant had said that he had received a phone call in 2014 during which the caller, posing as insurance company officer, had said that his insurance policy had turned mature and he had to pay some amount to clear the payment which had got stuck up. The unsuspecting customer had submitted the demanded amount in the account number given by the gang. The complainant had further claimed that he had been swindled of Rs 10 lakh deposited in different accounts as directed by the gang.
On receipt of the complaint, the SSP had directed the in-charge of Rani Pokhari police station to register and investigate the case. The investigating officer Deepak Rawat, a sub-inspector, had found that the account in which gang was asking to deposit money belonged to one Kavita. He had also got information that many such gangs have been active in Ghaziabad and NOIDA area. The police had first nabbed one Mahesh Lal from Almora on January 1 and subsequently, other members of the gang were from sector 71 of NOIDA on Sunday.
Those arrested are Dipak Singh, a resident of Bulandsahar, Dharmendra Kumar, a resident of Meerut, Mohit ( Bulandsahar), Anand Pandey (Jagatpuri, New Delhi), Deepak Kumar ( Aligargh), Sudhir Gupta ( Shahjahanpur) and Akshay Kumar Gupta of Kannauj. The accused are learnt to have confessed their involvement in the crime. The police have recovered smartphones, debit cards, bank passbooks and a car from their possession.
