Independent candidate Gaurav Goyal elected Roorkee Mayor
Congress candidate comes second, BJP candidate manages third place in mayoral poll
Continuing the trend of an independent candidate winning the election to the top post in the urban local body of Roorkee, independent candidate Gaurav Goyal was declared elected to the post of mayor on Sunday. According to the official data, in the Municipal Corporation of Roorkee (MCR) elections, Goyal received 29,080 votes while the Congress candidate Rishu Singh Rana came in second with 25,629 votes. The Bharatiya Janata Party mayoral candidate Mayank Gupta managed to come in third with 19,142 votes. Of the total 90,833 votes polled, 4,616 were declared invalid. While the result of the mayoral election was declared in the evening, the results of elections held for the post of councillor in 40 wards were declared later. Out of the 40 seats of councillors, independent candidates won half- 20 seats, the BJP candidates won 17 seats while the Congress managed to win two seats and the Bahujan Samaj Party won only one seat.
While both the BJP and Congress were claiming to be confident of their candidate winning the election to the post of Roorkee mayor, BJP rebel Gaurav Goyal who contested the election as an independent candidate ended up trouncing his rivals from the national parites by a comfortable margin. He also set a record by getting elected to the mayoral position by the highest number of votes so far. Observers point out that though the Congress’ mayoral candidate managed to come in second, the BJP candidate was defeated by a margin of 9,938 votes by the BJP rebel Goyal. This is also bound to raise questions on the party’s selection of candidate.
When it comes to the election to the post of ward councillors, here too the independent candidates dominated the elections with half of the total 40 seats being won by independent candidates. The BJP came close with 17 seats while Congress had to make do with two seats and the BSP managed only one.
BJP’s ULB run stopped in Roorkee
The BJP was hoping to win the election to the mayor position in Roorkee but its run was brought to a halt by its own rebel and independent candidate Gaurav Goyal. Even when it comes to the councillors, independent candidates are fared well while the Congress has performed poorly. Though the BJP has lost the election to the post of Roorkee mayor, its members do occupy mayoral posts in five out of eight municipal corporations in the state.
It is pertinent to mention here that voting for the MCR elections was held on November 22 which saw 64.47 per cent voters exercising their franchise. The voting percentage was slightly less than the percentage in the previous election which had seen 65 per cent polling. While a total of 10 candidates contested the election for the mayoral post, a total of 212 candidates contested for the 40 positions of ward councillors.
It is also worth mentioning here that in the past, during the election for the post of municipal council chairman in 2003, independent candidate Dinesh Kaushik won the election. Similarly, in 2008 another independent candidate Pradeep Batra was elected while in 2013, independent candidate Yashpal Rana was elected the mayor. Rana joined the Congress after being elected the mayor and it was his brother who was fielded by the Congress for the mayoral contest this time.
