To maintain round-the-clock cleanliness during the Kanwad Mela set to start later this month, the newly appointed municipal commissioner of Haridwar, Nupur Verma has said that a hundred temporary sanitation workers will be deployed to handle the sanitation works during the Kanwad Mela. In addition to this, 200 temporary toilets shall also be set up at four points in the city and the lighting facility shall be enhanced on the roads.
Speaking to The Pioneer, Nupur Verma said that in order to provide facilities considering the large number of people expected to arrive during Kanwad Mela, a total of 200 toilets and urinals will be set up at Rodi Belwala, Bairagi camp, Pantdweep and Pul Jatwara. Out of these, 40 toilets and 12 urinals will be at Rodi Belwala, 50 toilets and 12 urinals at Pantdweep and in Bairagi camp and Pul Jattwara 30 toilets and six urinals each will be facilitated. Kanwad market shall be made in Pantdweep and Bairagi camp which will have 25 shops selling the Kanwad items. She said that the contractor will be making toilets in Pantdweep parking as well. Apart from this, two wheeler parking shall be made in Rodi Belwala as well. The contractor has been told to make 50 toilets in the parking. The municipal commissioner also said that during the Kanwad Mela dustbins shall be placed at different places since it is expected that there will be a 12-fold increase in garbage generation during the Kanwad Mela. The municipal commissioner assured that before the onset of Kanwad Mela on July 16 the lighting facility on the roads shall be rectified and enhanced. She said that an effective campaign shall be undertaken against the use of polythene. From January till date 204 challans have been issued to those violating the polythene ban with 2042 kilogrammes of polythene being seized and Rs 140250 being collected in penalty from those found violating the regulations.
