The National Handloom Expo, organised by the Uttarakhand Handloom and Handicraft Development Council, directorate of Industries, Development Commissioner (Handloom) Government of India, culminated on Sunday.
The Director Industries Sudhir Nautiyal said that the expo witnessed a very good public response this year. He said that the expo recorded a sale of Rs 5.62 Crore this year which is much better than the last year. A sale of Rs 3.5 crore was recorded last year in the expo.
A total of 155 weavers and weaver societies including 45 from Uttarakhand participated in the expo this year.
Experts believe that such expos and exhibitions are a good tool for sale of handicraft and handloom in our country. A survey conducted by the Agriculture Finance Corporation revealed that the exhibitions contribute to about 70 percent of total sales of handloom in India.
Director Industries Nautiyal said that the increased attention of the people of Dehradun for handloom products is a healthy sign. The director also distributed certificates to the weavers on the last day of the expo.
A ‘Ghuguti Makar Sankranti Mahotsav’ was organised on the occasion. Senior BJP leader and Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi was the Chief Guest in the programme.
In the cultural programmes the audience were enthralled by Garhwali and Kumaoni dance sequences performed by the team of Gaurav Bisht, Ganesh Dhami, Sachin Rauthan, Navin Negi and others. In the programme Nodal officer Shelly Dabral, Mela Officer K C Chamoli, Jagmohan Bahuguna and others were present.
