Jhanda Mela starts in Doon , 10 lakh devotees flock Darbar Sahib for prayer
Lakhs of devotees thronged Darbar Sahib on Monday and offered prayer to the ‘Jhanda Ji’. In the presence of the devotees, the new ‘Jhanda Ji’ was raised which also marked the beginning of the Jhanda fair on Monday.
As per the information received, nearly 10 lakh people have come this time to attend the fair. Last time, the figure was around seven to eight lakh. The old Jhanda ji was brought down in the morning. After wrapping up the Jhanda Ji with 41 plain Gilaaf (cloth cover) in the innermost section and 21 in the middle section and the main which is known as the Darshani Gilaaf, the new Jhanda ji was raised in the evening. This year, Kesar Singh from Hoshiyarpur Punjab gave the Darshani Gilaaf for the new Jhanda ji after waiting of almost 105 years. Singh’s grandfather enrolled himself for giving the Darshani Gilaaf and after so much of wait, the family was finally able to give Darshani Gilaaf.
Speaking about it, Mahant Devendra Das said, “It is the faith of the people which brings them here every year. The traditions are still alive and they bring people here in their lakhs. Around 10 lakh devotees have reached the Darbar this year. The height of the Jhanda ji is 95 ft this time.”
He further said, “We are planning to initiate organic farming. Everyone should eat and drink fresh and healthy things here. The Darbar has played a very important role in conserving the environment of the city and I think everybody should take things further.”
Pyare Singh Saini, a visitor, said, “I have been visiting the Jhanda Sahib for the past 30 years. It is not just a festival but a moment of faith and surrender. Thousands of people come here and offer prayers every year as their wishes are fulfilled by the divine grace.”
