With funds recently being released by the Central Government, the plan for building an international level zoo in Haldwani is picking pace.
The Central Government recently released Rs 20 crore to expedite work on this project which is to be executed on 412 hectare land area in Haldwani. This international-level zoo is to be built in three stages.
A sum of Rs 129 crore is to be spent on the first stage, Rs 90 crore on the second stage and Rs 85 crore on the third stage of construction of this zoo.
This project is being executed in the Gaulapar area of Haldwani near the international sports stadium. For the first phase of the construction, the Central Government recently released Rs 20 crore. The construction of the zoo’s boundary wall has been completed. Now, in the first phase of the construction, work is to be undertaken on biodiversity park, rescue centre and veterinary hospital.
The Haldwani zoo director Parag Madhukar Dhakate said that for this international-level zoo, a team from the state had toured zoos at Beijing in China, Moscow in Russia, Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, Japan, Mexico and London in Britain.
The international-zoo in Haldwani will have prominent wild animals of five continents- Asia, Africa, Europe, America and Australia. In the enclosures, each of which will be 20 hectare, the visitors will enter in a caged vehicle.
The animals will be roaming free inside the enclosures while the visitors will enter in protected vehicles. This will be the first such initiative in the country. The African safari is expected to be the most popular feature of the zoo.
Dhakate further informed that in the first phase of construction, the biodiversity park will be developed with a wide variety of flora.
A mono rail will also be set up for entertaining the children. The first phase of the zoo’s construction is expected to be completed in a time period of five months.
