Good voting turnout reported in first phase of Panchayat polls
Udham Singh Nagar district recorded highest voter turnout with 86.3 percent while with 55.36 percent voting Tehri Garhwal was at bottom of 12 districts where the Panchayat elections were held on Saturday.
In the Panchayat elections held in 2,464 village Panchayats of 30 blocks of the State held on Saturday, 69.27 percent of voters exercised their franchise. The voting in 3,315 polling booths ended at 5 pm on the day. The data of the State Election Commission shows that Udham Singh Nagar district recorded a very good voter turnout with 86.3 percent voters coming out to vote. With 55.36 percent voting, Tehri Garhwal was at bottom of 12 districts where the Panchayat elections were held on Saturday.
Nainital recorded 77.7 percent voter turnout while in Uttarkashi 75.87 percent voters came out to exercise their franchise. The Dehradun and Champawat districts recorded 74.45 and 73.22 percent voting respectively.
In Rudraprayag district ,72.71 percent voter turnout was reported while in Chamoli district the voting percentage was 71.61.
In the first phase, five blocks of Pauri, four of Almora, three each of Nainital, Pithoragarh and Chamoli districts went into the polls. Similarly voting was held in two blocks each of Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarkashi and Dehradun districts in the first phase.
One block each of Champawat, Bageshwar and Rurdraprayag district too went to the polls in the first phase.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Panchayat elections in 12 districts of the State are being held in three phases. After the voting for first phase on October 5, the voting for second and third phase voting would be held on October 11 and 16 respectively. The counting of votes would be done on October 21 and the results are expected to be declared on the same day.
