A total of 2364 girls and women in the provisional State capital reportedly benefited from the free transport facility (pick up and drop services) especially for women under the project ‘Sukhad’– an initiative of the Traffic Directorate of Uttarakhand on Sunday. An arrangement of 30 vehicles including 15 Magic and 15 vikrams was made at 10 different places in the city for this purpose. Under this initiative, girls and women were transported to their respective destinations free of cost between 10 am and 10 pm in the city. By 6 pm, 2036 citizens had benefited from free transport facility while by 8 PM, the number of beneficiaries had increased to 2364. Project ‘Sukhad’ aims at instilling sense of security among women; establishing coordination among police and women as well as developing communication between them so that women can approach the police in case of emergency; encouraging people to use public transport among others, said Traffic Directorate Uttarakhand director DIG Kewal Khurana on Sunday. In addition to 30 public transport vehicles deployed at 10 locations, police personnel were also deployed at locations to help the women avail of the facility.
Two police personnel including one woman constable were deployed at each point. Khurana said that vehicle drivers were earlier briefed about the same and were directed to behave politely with passengers. People were informed about the facility through pamphlets and stickers. Constables were deputed by traffic directorate from 9 am to 11 pm at police control room for monitoring the arrangements in the city, he said, adding that with the success of this initiative- Sukhad, it would be implemented in other districts too in the future.
Earlier, on January 28, more than 2000 women had benefited from this free service. This facility is being provided in Dehradun city between 10 am and 10 pm on the fourth Sunday of each month.
