CM Trivendra Singh Rawat makes the declaration on the floor of Assembly
In a dramatic move, the chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat made a declaration on the floor of the assembly on Wednesday that Gairsain would be the summer capital of Uttarakhand. Amid thumping of desks and cheers from treasury benches, the CM made this declaration immediately after presenting the budget. He said that people of the state are looking at the state government with a lot of hope and aspirations. “Today I want to give good news to the people of the state that Gairsain, Bharadisain would be the summer capital of the state,’’ he said. Later talking to the media persons, the CM became emotional and in a choked voice said that the day is historical for the state and it is the tribute of his government to the statehood activists. He said that a blueprint for development of Gairsain would be prepared soon. Rawat said that he could not sleep whole night yesterday and said that no one had any knowledge that the declaration on Gairsain would be made on Wednesday. On the question as to whether the central leadership of BJP was taken into confidence by CM before making the big declaration, Rawat said that there was no need of this as everyone knew that BJP in its vision document has declared that Gairsain would be made summer capital. On the status of Dehradun which is the temporary capital of the state, the CM said that a decision on this would be soon taken.
Meanwhile, the Congress party which was caught off guard by the declaration of the CM, said that the party is in favour of Gairsain being declared as permanent capital of Uttarakhand. The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Pritam Singh said that summer capital declaration is rhetoric. He said when Congress will come to power it would make Gairsain the permanent capital of Uttarakhand.
It is pertinent to mention here that located in the Chamoli district, Gairsain is an emotive issue especially in the mountains of Uttarakhand. In the statehood movement, Gairsain was at the epi-centre of the movement for separate state.
