The 178th foundation day of Nainital was celebrated with enthusiasm in the lake city on Monday. Attending the function held on the occasion as the chief guest, the State’s Transport and Social Welfare minister Yashpal Arya greeted the residents of Nainital on the city’s 178th birthday.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Arya said that Nainital is a natural heritage with its unique cultural aspects. He exhorted all to do their bit for ensuring the protection of this town. “Considering the changing scenario, efforts by all especially the youth are needed to protect Nainital from the environmental point of view,” said the minister.
Presiding over the function, the Nainital MLA Sanjeev Arya said that on the occasion, all should commit themselves to protecting and nurturing the lake city from all aspects. He exhorted the people to plant trees on occasions like birthdays, stating that the trees nurture life, make a city green and protect it from environmental degradation.
Earlier, the function began with a hawan. An multi-faith prayer ceremony was also held to seek peace and prosperity for Nainital and the rest of the world. Prominent personalities were felicitated for their contributions in various fields while stationery materials were presented to 30 meritorious and poor students from various schools. More than two dozen cakes baked by various organisations and institutions also elicited attention during the function. The cakes were cut by invited guests and later portions were distributed among the gathering.
