First phase of three-tier Panchayat polls in U’khand today
Elaborate arrangements made for free and fair elections. In 1st Phase 1495032 voters (732763 females, 762279 males) to elect their representatives in 30 blocks of state.
The stage is all set for the first phase of Panchayat elections on Saturday when people of 30 blocks would exercise their franchise. A total of 1495032 voters which includes 732763 female and 762279 male voters would elect their representatives for the three tier Panchayati Raj system. The state election commission has made adequate arrangements for the free and fair polling in the 12 districts of the state. The polling parties in all the 3315 polling booths arrived on Wednesday. The state administration has made elaborate security arrangements for the polls. In the elections, the voters of 2464 village Panchayats would elect 2464 Pradhans, 180406 members of Village Panchayats, 1022 members of Block Panchayats and 121 members of district Panchayats. The SEC has set up 2686 polling centres and 3315 polling booths for the first phase of voting.
Among the districts, 212365 voters are listed to exercise their franchise in three blocks and 378 village Panchayat in the first phase of polls. In Nainital district, 200729 voters of three blocks and 178 village Panchayats are enrolled to elect 173 Pradhans, 110 members of Block Panchayat and 11 district Panchayat members.
In the first phase, five blocks of Pauri, four of Almora, three each of Nainital, Pithoragarh and Chamoli districts would go to the polls.
Similarly two blocks each of Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarkashi and Dehradun district would participate in these elections.
One block each of Champawat, Bageshwar and Rurdraprayag district too would go to the polls in the first phase.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Panchayat elections in 12 districts of the state would be held in three phases. The voting for first phase would be held on October 5 while for second and third phase voting would be held on October 11 and 16 respectively. The counting of votes would be done on October 21 and the results are expected to be declared on the same day.
