AICC general secretary and former Chief Minister Harish Rawat staged a protest along with other party leaders and supporters on the issue of pending dues of sugar cane farmers near the Vidhan Sabha on Wednesday.
The protest also turned out to be show of solidarity with the Pradesh Congress Committee president Pritam Singh and leader of opposition Indira Hridayesh also participating in the protest demonstration.
On the other hand, chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat retorted stating that the ex-CM should also state what he had done for the sugarcane farmer during his chief ministerial term.
As per his plan, Harish Rawat along with his supporters moved to protest towards the Vidhan Sabha in the morning.
However, they were stopped at the police barricading on Haridwar Road.
There, the former CM along with PCC president Pritam Singh, Congress MLAs and other party leaders demonstrated against the State government on the issue of the pending dues of sugarcane farmers.
Responding to the protest, chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat opined that the former CM had now become a spokesman for private sugar mills though he had not bothered when he was the CM.
He said that the State Government has paid the farmers for all the sugar cane crushed by the cooperative and government sugar mills.
The CM stated that the government paid farmers for rice produce within 10 days, which is a record.
He suggested that Harish Rawat should protest along with sugar cane farmers in front of private sugar cane mills.
Stating that Harish Rawat is playing a double game, the CM said that he is treating the interests of private sugar mill owners as most important but if he really cares about farmers, he should protest outside private sugar mills along with farmers.
The CM clarified that in the 2017-18 crushing season the total payable amount of Rs 440.41 had been paid by the state government for the sugar cane crushed in cooperative and public sector sugar mills with no dues being left.
The current government facilitated Rs 507.61 crore financial assistance to government and public sugar mills in 2017-18 and 2018-19 whereas the amount during Harish Rawat’s tenure as CM was 231.59 crore during 2015-16 and 2016-17, the CM added.
