Establish inner line once again at Jauljivi, demands Maharaj
The State’s Tourism and Culture minister Satpal Maharaj has written to the Union Home minister Amit Shah and the Defence minister Rajnath Singh asking that the inner line be established again at Jauljivi. This is required considering internal and external security considerations, he said.
Maharaj pointed out that Byans, Chaundas and Darma valleys in Dharchula Tehsil of Pithoragarh district are linked to the borders with China and Nepal which makes them very sensitive from the strategic and geo-political points of view. He has written to Shah and Singh requesting that the inner line be established once again at Jauljivi to check the entry of outsiders. In his letters to them, the minister has stated that the inner line existed at Jauljivi for a long time due to strategic reasons. It was removed from Jauljivi and transferred without any practical evidence in 1990-91 to Marchha and Chiyalekh in Darma and Byans valleys respectively. Marchha and Chiyalekh adjoin the border with Nepal and are about 40 kilometres from the Indo-China border. He pointed out that due to the ongoing border dispute of China with India and China’s expansionist policy it remains a threat through Nepal to India’s internal and external security. The peace loving Bhotia tribals residing in Byans, Chaundas and Darma who are an integral part of this region’s heritage are feeling insecure due to the inner line being near the international border and rising criminal activities in the region. This can also create a serious challenge for the nation’s security. Stating that the internal and external security of the nation is of topmost importance, Maharaj has requested Shah and Singh to once again establish the inner line at Jauljivi.
