Doon police arrest man for theft of jewellery worth Rs 35 lakh

Dehradun police on Saturday arrested an interstate thief who had stolen jewellery worth nearly Rs 35 lakh along with Rs one lakh cash from a house in the Mayur Vihar area of Sahastradhara Road. The senior superintendent of police, Daleep Singh Kunwar said in the Press conference here on Sunday that the complainant Pooja Rathi registered a complaint on February 11 that she along with her family has gone to Haryana to attend a wedding on February 9 but when they returned after three days, they found out that their gold, silver and diamond jewellery along with about Rs one lakh cash was stolen from their house.
The SSP said that considering the seriousness of the crime, four separate police teams were formed to investigate the matter. He said that the first police team verified the accused arrested in theft crimes in the past and collected information regarding their present situation. The second team gathered information about those accused arrested in the crimes of theft, robbery, and forgery and were released on bail before the incident. The third team analysed about 140 before and after footage recovered from CCTV installed in the vicinity of the victim’s house. The fourth team interrogated people and gathered information through the informers’ network, said the SSP. He said that the team found a suspicious person in the CCTV footage who had covered his face with a shawl and was limping with his left leg and was seen near the victim’s house for three consecutive days before the theft. The appearance of this thief coincided with a man, a Saharanpur resident, Shamshad, who was arrested by the police earlier for theft in the same area. The SSP said that the police found out on verification from the court that Shamshad was out on bail.
Besides this, the people around the victim’s house also confirmed that he had come there before the theft. He said that the police finally arrested Shamshad on Saturday from Saharanpur and recovered all the stolen jewellery worth Rs 35 lakh along with Rs one lakh cash. “According to the accused, he used to live in the Mayur Vihar area and was aware of that area very well. He started analysing the area to carry out theft on February 8 and noticed a lock in a house on February 9. He observed it till late at night and noticed no movement there. He finally broke the lock in the wee hours of February 10 and stole all jewellery and cash kept in the almirah there,” said the SSP. He said that the accused has also confessed to carrying out thefts in Haryana and Saharanpur too.
A total of 18 cases under various sections and acts are registered against the accused in various police stations of Haryana and Dehradun, as per the police. The SSP said that the police team would also be given a reward of Rs 20,000 for doing incredible work in the case.
