The number of cases of alleged crimes against women reaching the State Women Commission has shown an increase. According to data provided by the commission, a total of 921 cases of gender crimes were reported from the month of April 2019 till now.
Looking at the district-wise data, Dehradun has topped the list with 492 cases reported in the year 2018-19. It is followed by Haridwar with 291 cases and Udham Singh Nagar with 264 cases. In year 2019, 333 cases were reported from the month of April till now in Dehradun.
Crimes against women comprise murder, rape, dowry harassment, mental harassment, domestic violence, threat to life and property among others. During 2018-19, mental harassment and harassment related to dowry were two of the most commonly reported cases in Uttarakhand with 377 and 182 cases respectively. Dehradun reported maximum number of mental harassment cases with 149 cases registered out of which 142 has been disposed of. Udham Singh Nagar exceeded Dehradun and other districts in dowry harassment cases. The district reported 59 cases of dowry out of 182 total cases.
However, the maximum number of rape cases reported is from Haridwar with 10 cases registered in 2018-19. It is followed by Udham Singh Nagar with five cases and Dehradun with four cases registered. Total rape cases registered in Uttarakhand were 25 out of which 23 were disposed of.
The data provided by the commission also revealed that the number of cases of threat to life and property was also high. Out of 1,474 registered cases, 308 cases were of threat to life and property. Murder and suicide cases were 23 in total out of which the highest number of cases were registered from Udham Singh Nagar followed by Haridwar.
