Crucial to maintain ranking while working to achieve better position in Swachchh Survekshan 2021: Mayor

On achieving 124th rank in the Swachchh Survekshan of this year, the Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ had recently stated that the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will try to reach among the 50 cleanest cities in the country in Swachchh Survekshan 2021. However, this target appears considerably difficult to achieve considering several issues including the current sanitation issues in the city.

The corporation jumped 264 slots to get 124th position in the survey within one year so the corporation seems to be optimistic regarding its chances of improving further in the next year’s cleanliness survey. However, the condition of the city has changed in the last few months after Covid-19 pandemic hit the State because before Covid-19, the public was using less single-use plastics, the garbage collection facilities were better and there was comparatively less accumulation of garbage on the roadsides. Now besides the other anomalies in the working of the corporation like overflowing drains during the monsoon, these issues have added to the already existing problems of the corporation. However, ‘Gama’ said that the MCD will attempt to attain a position among the 50 cleanest cities of India. According to him, the corporation will work harder and try to remove the shortcomings in the city regarding sanitation facilities so that Dehradun can improve its ranking in the Swachchh Survekshan 2021. He said that the municipal corporation knows that it is challenging to maintain sanitation facilities in the city in the post-Covid era therefore. However, the MCD will continue to maintain its current ranking and then it will work its way up to upgrade its position in the 2021 survey. “We will work to eradicate all the shortcomings which we could not remove this time regarding sanitation and drainage facilities in the city. Moreover, the contribution of citizens is also crucial, so I appeal to everyone to maintain cleanliness in Dehradun and contribute their time in the future for the cleanliness survey too,” added the mayor.
