Says he resigned because as in-charge of party in Assam he was not able to increase the tally of the party in the recent Lok Sabha elections
Former chief minister and member of Congress Working Committee (CWC), Harish Rawat has said that the Congress party would get a new president before July 20. He said that the CWC would soon meet on the issue. Talking to the media persons here on Tuesday, the veteran Congress leader said that he has resigned from the post of General Secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) because as in-charge of party in Assam he was not able to increase the tally of the party in the recent Lok Sabha elections. “ I was hoping that the party would win at least five seats in Assam and we would be able to stop BJP in two other seats but we could not improve on our tally of three seats we won in the elections of 2014,’’ he said.
On question of resignation of other congress leaders, Rawat said, “30-40 congressmen had contacted me and expressed their willingness to resign but I dissuaded them as they were holing middle level positions. However I believe that those who are sitting on responsible positions should take a decision.’’ When prodded on whether or not Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Pritam Singh should continue on his post, Rawat declined to make any comment. He however added that second and third level leadership should be developed in the Congress party in Uttarakhand.
On the issue of state government allowing setting up a unit of whisky (Hilltop) near Devprayag, the former Chief Minister said that it is not proper to set up plant in a place of religious importance like Devprayag. He however accepted that the original concept for making alcoholic beverages from local fruits was his. “There is a big difference in fruit wine and whisky. The fruits produced in Uttarakhand are not very competitive due to geographical factors like distance from snow line and others. My government decided to incorporate use of B and C grade fruits in Excise policy however the brand which mixed the fruit juice was not accepted in the market.’’
Sense of detachment within me- Harish Rawat
Harish Rawat candidly accepted that successive defeats at the hustings in the years 2017 and 2019 have instilled a sense off detachment in him. Appearing in a philosophical mood, the Congress stalwart said that he is searching for an inspiration now. He said that his government took a slew of social security measures which were unprecedented and every section of society got benefit from them but these efforts did not reap political dividents. Rawat added that he has no personal aspiration now as he has achieved everything from being a Block Pramukh to chief minister.
