In protest against the pathetic health conditions in the state, the Uttarakhand Congress held a vehement protest at the state health directorate on Monday. The Congress workers expressed their anger at recent deaths of pregnant women at Gairsain and Almora due to non availability of health services . The Congress workers led by Vice President Surya Kant Dhasmana assembled at the state health directorate on Monday afternoon. The police personnel deployed there had closed the main entrance and prevented the Congress workers from moving inside the building. In protest, Dhasmana along with his supporters sat outside the gate and held a demonstration there. The agitation by the Congress blocked the public movement in the directorate following which the director general (DG) state health services, Dr Amita Upreti went to the closed gates and held talks with the protestors. She told Dhasmana that the entrance of the directorate was closed due to sanitisation of the building as some personnel were found positive for Covid-19. She said that the incidents of Gairsain and Almora are very unfortunate. Dhasmana said that the Congress party is regularly informing the health department about the poor condition of state health services but the state government and the department have failed to improve things. He said that it is unfortunate that on one hand the Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat is claiming credit for making Gairsian as summer capital of state and that he has purchased land there but on the other hand a 21 year old pregnant woman lost her life at due to lack of proper treatment at community health centre (CHC) there. Her death has exposed the claims of CM and the state health department, he added.
The Congress leader told the DG that the department should improve things immediately failing which it should get prepared to face protest from the Congress workers. The agitators also handed over a memorandum to the DG state health services on the occasion. The spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress Garima Dassauni, state secretary Manju Tomar and others were present in the protest.
