Complete George Everest site works by December: Maharaj
Everest House being renovated, various development works underway to develop site into heritage tourism destination
The State’s Tourism and Culture minister Satpal Maharaj has directed the officials concerned to ensure that all renovation and development works at the George Everest House are completed by December this year. The location is being renovated and developed as a heritage tourism site.
Visiting the site in the Mussoorie area on Sunday, the minister inspected the ongoing works and interacted with the officials concerned. Works amounting to about Rs 23 crore are currently underway at the George Everest House. Maharaj said that in addition to renovation of the house occupied by George Everest, various other development works are being undertaken at the site. Of the total works amounting to Rs 23 crore, works amounting to Rs 10 crore have been completed while the remaining components of the project will be started after securing permission from the Forest department. Works amounting to about Rs seven crore are to be undertaken after the required permission is granted by the Forest department. Maharaj further informed that the works at this site include renovation of the George Everest House, setting up of a gazing hut, amphi theatre, George Everest peak trek route, selfie-point, improvement of the approach road and facilitating mobile toilets. Additionally, five food vans will also be provided to local shopkeepers. The minister directed the officials concerned to ensure that all the works at the site are completed by December this year. Earlier, the deadline for completing these works was set at September 2020.
