CM to participate in voluntary sanitation programme at Gandhi Park
On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat along with others will be leading a voluntary cleanliness campaign at Gandhi Park. During the programme the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will be launching an awareness song in Garhwali and Kumaoni languages.
Municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey said, “As per the guidelines of Government of India, we will be conducting the programme ‘Swachchhta hi Seva’ campaign at Gandhi Park. CM Rawat will be present here and will launch the awareness song, after which he along with other present members and participants will do voluntary labour.”
When asked about the penalties he said, “MCD has taken a different approach, our motive is to first mentally prepare citizens regarding the ban on these products. We have tried the usual way and collected upto Rs four lakh by issuing challan to people, but that is not a permanent solution. This time starting from August 27 we have been interacting with stakeholders and citizens personally to make them voluntarily stop the use of polythene and plastic, this approach is working. You can see that people are more aware about the ban on polythene and plastic bags now.”
He added, “We are bound to follow Uttarakhand High Court’s orders, according to which five types of polythene and plastic products are banned in Uttarakhand. This includes plastic straws, polythene carry bags and disposal products made by plastic and polystyrene (thermocol).”
When asked about the cloth bags distribution he said, “Our aim is to provide at least one cloth bag to each household in all 100 wards. The bags will be given free of cost to the people by the MCD. For a population of nearly eight lakh people the management for this distribution might take about 10 to 15 days.”
It is pertinent to mention here that MCD is also planning to organise a human chain event by the third week of October.
