CM announces compensation in deaths caused by spurious liquor
Congress to protest against Govt across State today
Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has announced Rs 2lakh compensation to each family of persons killed after consuming spurious liquor in Haridwar district and Rs 50,000 financial assistance to those ailing after consuming the spurious hooch. Further, a joint committee will be formed with neighbouring Uttar Pradesh to ascertain actual details of the incident. On the other hand, the Congress has decided to burn the State Government in effigy in all district headquarters on Sunday to protest against governmental failure and the rising influence of the liquor mafia in the State.
On Friday, the death of 13 people and more than a dozen falling sick in Haridwar district following consumption of spurious liquor had caused uproar in the State, especially among the political circles. On Saturday, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat announced that dependents of those who had died would receive Rs 2 lakh compensation while those in a serious condition would receive Rs 50,000 financial assistance. Earlier, on receiving information about the incident, Rawat had directed the officials concerned to ensure proper medical treatment of those ailing after consumption of the spurious liquor. As people had also died in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh due to the same cause, Rawat also talked to his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath. It was decided that a joint committee will be formed to ascertain the facts of the incident.
Stating that strict action will be taken against the guilty, Rawat said that officials have been alerted to prevent repeat of such incidents. Following this incident, 17 employees including personnel of Excise department and police have been suspended. An inquiry committee has also been formed under the Haridwar additional district magistrate. Rawat has also warned that strict action will be taken against the officials concerned in case any incident related to illegal liquor sale comes to light.
However, the Congress is all set to raise this issue. Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Garima Mehra Dasauni said that the party will raise this issue both inside and outside the Vidhan Sabha. Over pricing of liquor in licensed shops and other anomalies in the liquor trade have exposed the rising influence of liquor mafia in the state, she said. Further, on the directions of the PCC chief Pritam Singh, the Congress will burn the State Government in effigy at all district headquarters on Sunday. PCC spokesman, RP Raturi, said that the latest incident is a result of the State Government working together with the liquor mafia to spread consumption of liquor in the State. He further alleged that the excise policy of the State is fully in favour of the liquor mafia while encouraging the smuggling of liquor and consolidating the supply of alcohol even in villages.
