Children should plant trees on their birthdays-Governor
The Governor of Uttarakhand Baby Rani Maurya has said that the schools play a major role in nation building and the future of the country hinges on the quality of the education. Maurya also said that children should plant trees on their birthday. She was addressing a programme organised to mark 150th foundation day of Sherwood College in Nainital on Tuesday. She said that in India, emphasis is always laid on culture, virtues and tradition. Praising the Sherwood College, she said that apart from bookish knowledge, the school provides practical knowledge to the students. Laying emphasis on mental strength along with intelligence the governor said that virtues like affection and love towards the nation, society and family should be inculcated in the students. She added that aim of education should not be for merely getting the bookish knowledge but it should lay stress on making the students a better citizen. The governor advocated proper use of internet for students and said that they should not forget the importance in this age of modern gadgets. She advised the students to read the books written on lives of great personalities and exhorted them to take a pledge to save environment and water. Later in the evening, the students staged drama and an impressive PT display which was much appreciated by the gathering.
