Various efforts are being undertaken by the government to ensure the desired level of education among the youngsters. Considerable fund allocations are also being made under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and other programmes to ensure this. However, at a government school in a village of Narsan block of Haridwar district, the students are also being made to sweep the school.
The case has come to light from the government primary school in Libberhedi. Here more than half a dozen school students are made to sweep the entire school building every day. The students have been given the responsibility of picking up the garbage and throwing it out after sweeping the premises of the school. This is in addition to attending the class and going about their studies. This is not the first such case coming to light in a government school.
Meanwhile, the school principal Vandana said that there is no saniation worker in the school. “If the administration asks us to sweep, we will also pick up brooms,” she said.
The Roorkee sub divisional magistrate Ravindra Singh says that if this is a case of Shramdaan (voluntary labour) being done by the children then it is not wrong. He said, “Even we did Shramdaan while in school. However, if the children are being made to sweep the school as a routine responsibility then it is wrong. The matter will be checked into and concrete action will be taken if any anomaly is ascertained,” he said.
