Grills two prime witnesses: Sushant’s flatmate & friend Pithani and cook Neeraj Singh
As part of efforts to re-create a crime scene and re-assess the circumstances leading to the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, the CBI team on Saturday visited the late actor’s duplex-flat in Mount Blanc at Bandra’s Carter Road in north-west Mumbai along with Sushant’s flatmate and friend Siddharth Pithani and cook Neeraj Singh and grilled these two key witnesses.
Ahead of zeroing in on the late Sushant’s flat, the CBI investigators visited the Bandra police station where Accidental Death Report (ADR) was registered on June 14 the day when the actor was found hanging in his flat and the Cooper Hospital, where the post-mortem was conducted.
Though the Mumbai Police had gone through these exercises as part of the investigations they conducted after registering ADR, the CBI, which has been directed to investigate the case based on the FIR registered by the Patna Police, is looking afresh at the case from all angles.
One of the questions that the CBI team reportedly asked the team of doctors that conducted the post-mortem on Sushant’s body, as to why it conducted the post-mortem before the receipt of the actor’s Covid-19 test report. The stand taken by the doctors that there was no provision under the law that prohibited from conducting the post-mortem before the receipt of the corona report. A doctor, however, reportedly conceded to the CBI that they conducted the post-mortem late at night after being told to do so by the Mumbai Police.
The CBI team reportedly questioned Sushant’s cook Neeraj Singh as to from where he had obtained and supplied drugs to the late actor.
In a related development, from the New Delhi-based AIIMS — upon a request by the CBI — a five-member team of medical board of forensic experts is visiting Mumbai to look into Sushant’s autopsy report and study the case from various other angles.
Among other things, the AIIMS team will study the injury pattern on Sushant’s body and correlate it with circumstantial evidence. The team will also examine the preserved viscera and check and analyse if any anti-depressants were given to the actor in the run-up to his alleged suicide.
Friday’s investigations were crucial considering that the CBI took Sushant’s flatmate and friend Siddharth Pithani and cook Neeraj Singh to the late actor’s flat for re-creation of crime scene and grilled them on things that happened at the flat on the night of June 13 and on June 14 before and after the actor was found dead in his room.
Apart from the actor’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty who has been accused of abetting Sushant’s suicide, Siddharth and Neeraj are key witnesses in the sensational case. While Siddharth knew personal things about Sushant, Neeraj — being at the flat at all times — was privy to many things that went on in the actor’s flat for the previous several months.
Neeraj knew minute details of the late actor’s lifestyle and the people, including Rhea Chakraborty and the actor’s family members who used to visit and stay at the flat
The CBI team reportedly questioned at any point of time he had obtained and supplied drugs to the late actor. It also questioned if he suspected Rhea was giving him “overdose” medicine or anti-depressant to Sushant and in her absence, whether Siddharth would give him any medicine.
It may be recalled that the witnesses in the cases had earlier told the Mumbai Police that the room where Sushant was found dead had been closed, a key maker tried unsuccessfully open it and the lock had to be broken open using a hammer.
During their questioning, the CBI asked both Siddharth and Neeraj as to who had called the key maker – identified as Rafique Chabiwala – to the late actor’s sixth floor duplex flat and who called the police control room and reported about Sushant’s death.
Key maker Rafique had earlier told the Mumbai Police that he had received a call from Siddharth at 1.05 pm on June 14. In turn Rafique asked Siddharth to share a photograph of the door lock on his WhatsApp number
He said that till then, he was unaware that the house belonged to Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. He also mentioned that he did not know the caller’s identity then, but later came to know that it was Sidharth Pithani after several media reports stated it.
Rafique, who did not know as to whom the flat where he was supposed to go belonged, reached the late actor’s flat little later. He tried to open the lock but failed to do so.
The keymaker reportedly told Siddharth that he could not open the lock because it was a computerised lock and suggested that the lock had to be broken using a hammer which he did. He, however, was not allowed to enter the room where it was subsequently found that the actor was lying dead. Siddharth sent him away from the flat by paying Rs 2,000 to him for his services.
Apart from scanning Sushant’s flat, the CBI is also examining the terrace attached to the late actor’s flat.
The investigators are expected to do a dummy test of how the actor could have hanged himself.
Having taken into possession Sushant’s things like laptop, mobile phone, plates, glasses, bed-sheets and the piece of cloth that he allegedly used to hang himself, the CBI is likely to examine the contents inside the laptops and call data in his mobile phones, while it would send other things for a forensic test.
The Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) officials accompanying the visiting CBI team are examining the building and recreating the scene.
Meanwhile, the CBI team members are studying the case diary and the 56 statements that the Bandra police have recorded during the inquiries under the Code of Criminal Procedure. It is also studying a dozen statements recorded by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case registered by them.
