On last day CM Trivendra Singh Rawat holds public meeting. Cong’s Anju Lunthi challenges Chandra Pant of BJP
The campaign for the crucial Pithoragarh by election ended at 5 pm on Saturday. On last day, the chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, former chief minister Harish Rawat and other leaders threw themselves in the campaign in support of their candidates. The voting for the by election would be held on November 25 and the counting of votes would be done on November 28. Addressing a public meeting at Ramlila Ground of Pithoragarh, CM appealed the people to vote for BJP candidate Chandra Pant. Terming death of former finance minister Prakash Pant as irreparable loss he said that the late leader was an expert of parliamentary procedures. Paying rich tributes to Pant the CM said that all the dreams he had for development of Pithoragarh would be fulfilled.
In this by election, both Congress and BJP have fielded women candidates. The Congress candidate is Chandra Pant who is the widow of former finance minister Prakash Pant. The strategy of the Congress party is to extract the electoral mileage by invoking sympathy of people for Late Prakash Pant. The Congress on the other hand has given ticket to Anju Lunthi. Apart from being a protégé of local heavyweight and former MLA, Mayukh Mahar, Lunthi has been in politics for quite some time. She is a two time Block President and belongs to an influential family.
The election commission has taken all measures for ensuring free and fair polls.
In the by election an electorate of 105708 voters are registered to exercise their franchise out of them 52871 are male voters while 52837 are female voters. The election commission has set up 145 polling stations out of whom 43 are located in urban areas while 102 are in rural areas.
