Business hit hard as 16000 bank workers remain on strike
The strike affects transactions worth Rs 5000 in the state
The strike of employee unions of banks adversely affected trade and business in Uttarakhand on Wednesday. More than 16000 employees of nationalized banks remained on strike on the day due to which business transactions worth Rs 5000 Crores were affected in Uttarakhand. On the day, the employees under the banner of United Forum of Bank Unions assembled at the parade ground in the morning. The employees then took out a march which passed through Rajpur road, Darshan Lal Chowk and Lansdowne Chowk before returning back to the parade ground.
The convener of the united forum of bank unions, Jagmohan Mendiratta said that the bank employees are agitated by government’s decision to merge Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda ( BOB). He said that prior to it the government had merged five associated banks of State Bank of India ( SBI) but the basic problem of banks, the Non Performing Assets ( NPA) instead of decreasing have increased. Mendiratta added that it is strange that the government on one hand is giving licences to new small banks and on other hand is merging established banks of public sector. He said that merger of banks is putting undue strain on employees with many of them retrenched by banks.
The union leader also took the task for doing nothing to recover NPAs from big corporate houses who have 80 percent of bad loans. Apart from registering their protest on merger of banks, the employees also want that their pending wage revision should be done without delay. The speakers in the protest meeting threatened that the employees are ready to launch a major agitation if the decision of merger of banks is not taken back and there demand of wage revision is ignored further.
