After apology tendered by Laksar MLA Sanjay Gupta over his ‘Beef Biryani’ statement, the ball is now in the court of the state party president Ajay Bhatt to either take some disciplinary action against the MLA or excuse him for his unsavoury utterances against the chief minister. However, it is certain that whatever the decision, the party brass would have to explain things.
If Bhatt decides not to take any action against Gupta, the chances of which are very high in the aftermath of the public apology and expression of regret on the part of the MLA, he would be termed too soft on the issue of maintaining discipline in the saffron ranks, which might not go down well with the camp followers of the chief minister. In case, a stern disciplinary action is taken despite the apology the move might be viewed as too harsh by those nursing grievances against the style of functioning of the CM.
Gupta sparked a row when he took exception to the presence of the CM at the marriage ceremony of the son of former MLA Mohammad Shahzad while stating that he had no time to hear out the concerns of the party lawmakers. The row took a rancorous turn as the MLA alluded to beef Biryani served at the wedding ceremony the CM attended.
The party insiders speculate that the state party chief Bhatt must definitely ponder over the fact that Gupta if let off the hook would become the third party legislator after Khanpur MLA Pranav Singh Champion and Rudrapur MLA Rajkumar Thukral against whom he refrained from taking any action. “ In such a scenario, a belief that one can get away by tendering apology even after attacking party leadership would set in among the party leaders, which is not good for a party committed to internal discipline, said one of them.
When contacted, the spokesperson of state BJP, Shadab Shams said that it is prerogative of the party president to take action on the issue. He also clarified that the party president is not bound by any time- frame to respond to the explanation submitted by the MLA.
A party leader on condition of anonymity admitted that the state party chief must be in a dilemma whether to take action or not to take action. “This is why he is taking time to act. However, the time warrants that the CM and the top party leadership must solve the Haridwar puzzle so as to ensure that no further voice of dissent comes up to embarrass them. “The real problem is that the MLAs and some other party leaders in Haridwar are feeling suffocated due to the dominance exerted by camp loyal to the cabinet minister Madan Kaushik. As long as the grievances of the leaders belonging to other camps in Haridwar are not addressed the voice of dissent would continue to haunt the state party roost,’’ he said.
