Teams of premier officer training academies of Indian Army, Navy and Air Force will participate in prestigious Sabhiki Cup 2018 at Indian Military Academy (IMA) Dehradun. The five day sports event started on March 19. The hosts IMA won all the three matches of the day.
The Public Relation Officer (PRO) of IMA, Lt Col Dinesh Sharma said that teams from IMA, Dehradun, National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Air Force Academy, Dundigal, Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai and Officers’ Training Academy, Gaya will participate in the prestigious Cup.
He informed that Sabhiki Cup, the erstwhile Triangular Cup, was instituted in year 1972 to promote the sportsmanship spirit, esprit-de-corps and healthy interaction between training institutes at the National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune, the Indian Military Academy (IMA), and Army Cadet College (ACC), Dehradun. In 1975, the Officer’s Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, also expressed its desire to participate in the event which was agreed upon by the Army headquarters and hence was renamed ‘Quadrangular Meet’ in 1976.
Later, the Indian Naval Academy (INA) and the Air Force Academy (AFA) also joined the meet in 1991. In recognition of the role played by the then Commandant, NDA, in making the cup a popular platform for sports, and personnel of the three services, the hexagonal Cup was re-instituted as ‘Sabhiki Cup’ in 1991.
The Sabhiki Cup includes games of Basketball, Cross Country, Tennis, Squash, Volleyball and Football.
The overall winner and the recipient of the coveted ‘Sabhiki Cup’ will be decided by the overall performance of the teams in all the disciplines.
