Apathetic authorities, irresponsible citizens

Roadsides & picnic spots turn into garbage dumps & boozing points

Since the State Government approved some relaxations to the locals after lockdown, the movement of people to tourist destinations and picnic spots has picked up once again. However, this has also resulted in people drinking liquor irresponsibly and leaving behind a trail of trash in picturesque locations ranging from Maldevta, Jhadipani, Gucchupani, Sahastradhara and even the roadsides leading to these destinations and in the suburbs. The garbage that includes plastic waste and empty glass and plastic bottles of liquor, water and soft drinks can be observed lying around in the areas near Maldevta and Dehradun-Mussoorie Road. Some people near the Mussoorie Road stated that they wanted to complain about this issue for long but since the area does not belong to the municipal corporation, they did not know which authority should be approached. Some also said that there are not sufficient dustbins in such areas due to which some people throw garbage on the roadside and create nuisance by drinking and raising ruckus. On being asked about such issues, the district officials stated that there are dustbins in most of the areas but people do not use them. The people should use dustbins besides acting as a responsible citizen and stop throwing garbage on the roadside intentionally, as per the officials. Furthermore, the Dehradun city magistrate, Kusum Chauhan also made it clear that if an area does not come under municipal corporation or municipality, it comes under the District Panchayat. Regarding the issue, she further added that she will look into the matter and will talk to the officials concerned but she also appealed to the people to maintain sanitation in such tourist spots instead of making an area a trash dumping place.
