In a significant development in the treatment of Covid-19 patients, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh has announced that it has started Convalescent Plasma Therapy technique to treat the disease. The doctors of the premier institute have collected three units of plasma from as many donors on July 27, 29 and August 1. The plasma would now be used in the treatment of the Covid-19 patients. Incidentally AIIMS Rishikesh is the first institute in Uttarakhand to use plasma therapy technique in the treatment of Covid-19.
The Director of AIIMS Rishikesh, Ravi Kant said that when a person becomes infected with any microbe, his immune system produces antibodies to fight against the invading microbe. He said that these antibodies increase their numbers as the patient recovers from the disease. Ravi Kant elaborated further that antibodies produced in a person who has recovered from corona when injected in a Covid-19 patient neutralize the active virus and help in speedy recovery. He called upon those recovering from Covid-19 to donate to convalescent plasma and come forward to save the lives of other people.
The Head of Department (HoD) of Blood bank, Dr Geeta Negi said that any recovered patient of Covid-19 can donate plasma 28 days after getting negative for the disease. She said that the whole blood plasma and other components of the donor are separated by an Apheresis machine. “This process is completely safe for plasma donors, and has no adverse effect on the health of the donor,’’ she quipped.
