Accused Ajay Sonkar alias Ghonchu arrested in liquor deaths case
Police arrests ex-councillor who was planning to surrender in court
Following Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat’s stern instruction to catch all the accused in the case of deaths caused by consumption of illicit liquor, the Dehradun police arrested accused ex-councillor Ajay Sonkar alias Ghonchu on Monday evening. The accused is the main culprit purportedly behind the illicit supply of liquor in the Pathariya Peer area at Neshville road, which saw the death of at least six people while eight others are still undergoing treatment after consuming illicit liquor.
Addressing the media persons on Monday night, Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Arun Mohan Joshi said, “We received information that the accused Ajay Sonkar alias Ghonchu is planning to surrender himself in the court on Monday, after which we stationed one officer in civil dress outside the court premises. He might have gotten information about this, which is why he then turned back from the court. Amidst all this he was arrested due to the alertness of the team which was already nearby. There are some other names as well, on which we are working. If in the investigation it is found that there is any other person responsible for those deaths, immediate steps will be taken.”
He further said, “On September 20, at about 5 PM we received information about few deaths that might have happened because of the consumption of poisonous liquor. Later after speaking with the locals we got to know that they had already cremated three bodies. So, we cannot say for sure how those three died. However, as far as the deaths that happened on the next day are concerned, the bodies have gone through the post-mortem procedure. In the post mortem report the doctors have stated that they died of intoxication, now what exactly the intoxicant is we cannot say, only after the viscera report is received will it be clarified as to what intoxicant they exactly died from.”
He added, “Methanol has been found in the bodies of five of the patients who are taking treatment presently. A team from IIT Roorkee will also be checking at the place where the brand of country liquor which these people consumed is made, after which only we can say anything for sure.”
According to the information provided by the police, during the preliminary interrogation the accused Sonkar said that he used to buy country liquor bottle for Rs 70 from a liquor shop at Connaught Place and then used to sell it to his agents at Rs 85 each. The agents then further used to sell it in Rs 100 or so.
The accused Sonkar has been booked under the section 304 of the Indian Penal Code and Gangster Act.
It is pertinent to mention here that so far, Rajendra (40), Guddu (30), Sharan Singh (64), Akash (32), Surendra (35), Inder (40) have died while in AIIMS, Rishikesh, Raju (63) and Anshul are undergoing treatment.
