About 150 girls and boys of various age groups participated in the 8th district level Wushu championship organised in the hall of Bada Akhada at Kankhal on Tuesday. The championship started with stone breaking demonstration by senior students in which they broke 10 marble slabs placed one over the other with one blow of the hand.
Presiding over the contest, Raghumuni Maharaj of Panchayati Udaseen Bada Akhada said that one could near god more through sports than doing the scriptures merely by rote. Sports must be an essential part of one’s life.
Two students of Kankhal, Judo champion Ark Sharma and volleyball player Garima Choudhary were awarded by SP city Kamlesh Upadhyay since they were selected in national teams. The state secretary of Wushu Association, said, “This is the first championship of the year 2019 for sub-junior, junior and senior level contest. Sub junior contest is held for students aged between from four to 14 while 14 to 16 years age group is for junior category and 16 onwards are senior level students from across the district. The selected students will compete in state and national level Wushu championships. Presiding over the inaugural function as chief guest, SP City Kamlesh Upadhyay said, “Parents must come forward to infuse the spirit of sports in children and let them pursue it as profession if the child has the caliber. It is unfortunate that children are so much pressurised these days with academic syllabus that they hardly get time to do sports still 150 students came for the event which is praiseworthy.” At the closing ceremony, CO city Abhay Pratap Singh gave the medals to the winning students. In 20 kg girls category Anushree won gold medal and in 45 kg category, Sakshi won gold and Kiran got Bronze medal. In 45 kg boys category, Akshay won gold. In 70 kg, Akash bagged gold and Prince silver.
