Three suspended policemen and a fourth person were arrested by the Special Task Force in the high profile case which saw three policemen seizing cash from a property dealer under the pretext of enforcing election model code of conduct. The four will be presented in court on Wednesday.
On Monday and Tuesday, the STF interrogated the three suspended policemen and Anupam Sharma, who had handed over a bag reportedly filled with cash to property dealer Anurodh Panwar from whom it was seized by the cops. The STF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ridhim Aggarwal said that the three police personnel and Sharma had been arrested under various sections of the IPC and would be presented in the court on Wednesday. She said, “We will continue to collect further evidence in this case. We have enough technical evidence on the basis of which the arrests were made. During interrogation the suspects made contradictory statements which provided us with important leads. We will work on these leads and collect further evidence. The four were arrested under sections 341 (wrongful restraint), section 170 (impersonating a public servant), section 390 (robbery) and section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.”
It is pertinent to mention here that on the night of April 4, property dealer Panwar was returning with a bag of cash handed over to him by Sharma when he was stopped by three policemen on Rajpur Road. The three police personnel-Dinesh Negi, Himanshu Upadhyay and Manoj seized the bag under the pretext of enforcing the election model code of conduct while one of them also impersonated Inspector General Ajay Rautela, in whose official SUV they were driving. The anomalies in the case were exposed after Panwar approached the Income Tax department and then the police to enquire about the cash seized only to be informed that no such amount had been deposited with the authorities concerned. An FIR was lodged in the case on April 9 and later on April 12, investigation of the case was handed over to the STF. It should also be mentioned here that the exact amount involved is yet to be ascertained.
