Due to polling for the local body elections held on Sunday, the 177thfoundation day of Nainital city was commemorated a day late here on Monday. The event was celebrated enthusiastically by both local residents and tourists visiting the Lake City. Apart from the ceremonial cutting of a cake in the presence of school children, local residents, tourists and invited guests, various events were organized to mark the occasion.
At the programme held in the Bishop Shaw school at Tallital in Nainital, the high court justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari was the chief guest. He greeted citizens on the occasion of Nainital’s foundation day. The high court justice and other guests also participated in a hawan organized on the occasion. Speaking as the special guest on the occasion, the local MLA Sanjeev Arya greeted the public and appealed citizens to cooperate in efforts aimed at the development of the city. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, historian professor Ajay Rawat said that it was on November 18 in 1841 that P Barron is said to have discovered Nainital. Later, during 1842, the fourth commissioner of Kumaon, George Thomas Lucington officially established Nainital as a European settlement.
Rawat said that before its ‘discovery’ by the British businessman in 1841, Nainital was mainly a place of religious importance. A fair used to be held here once in a year. The temple at that time was situated at the site where the boathouse is presently located. On September 18, 1880 a devastating landslide on the Alma mountain had destroyed the temple at its original location. Later, during 1882, the Naina Devi temple was constructed at the location where it still stands to this day. Appreciating various cultural and other aspects of the town, the historian also stressed on the need for united efforts for conservation of the Naini lake. read more posts…
