108 ambulance- Accidents put question mark on efficiency of new company
Three accidents involving the ambulances of the 108 emergency ambulance service in last few days has put up a question mark on the qualification and skills of the employees recruited by the new company selected for the operation of fleet of ambulances of 108 service.
After a minor accident of an ambulance in Kashipur of Udam Singh Nagar early this week, a section of employees of the ambulance service claimed that the ambulance was driven by a newly recruited driver who had no experience of driving. On Thursday, two more ambulances of the 108 ambulance service met with accidents in Almora and Pithoragarh districts.
When contacted, the General Manager ( GM), Marketing of the Community Action and Motivation Programme ( CAMP), Pradeep Rai refuted the allegation that the drivers of the vehicles which met with accidents were inexperienced. “The accidents which occurred on Thursday were unfortunate but both the drivers involved in the accident were working from last ten years . One of them has even said that he was taking a nap when the accident occurred,’’ he said.
Rai further added that the company has taken over the operation of 55 ambulances in the state. He claimed that 20 percent employees of the old staff have already joined the new company while another 20 percent would do so on May 1. Rai claimed that the recruitment of the new employees is being done on the basis of the criteria of selection and they would be provided with mandatory training. Regarding the allegation that the company is inexperienced, Rai said that it is also operating a similar service in Chhattisgarh.
